Where can I get objective health insurance information?
- Consumer reports will give you some information, but I'd let them stick to toasters and cars. They do not have a good track record with insurance. I could give you 2 or 3 scenarios where they have recommended a company as being the 'best' and the company went out of business or filed bankruptcy not long after the recommendation. Also, I have seen where they have rated two different products with the same insurance company a different grade for customer service. What was odd about that is the customer service is provided by the same people at the same phone number so it should be exactly the same. You just need to find an insurance broker that you can trust to give you good information, that's been in the business for a long time, has industry credentials, etc. That's going to be better than getting it from a writer who tried to compile information from talking with multiple insurance brokers. You're uming that after the conversations the writer is an 'expert. ' That's just not the case. Just go straight to the expert and if you do not trust the information then find another

- I do not think it exists. Even if the insurance company is in more than one state, the rules are state specific. In addition, company will have numerous different policies as many as 50 per state. Some will do completely custom plans. Also there is no way to quantify the information you are requesting. For example: someone may say United Healthcare is horrible but they purchased the bottom level plan, basically knowing they are purchasing a horrible plan and only wanted barebones coverage. The way you select insurance is look at the legitimate companies in your area - United Healthcare, BS, BC, Aetna, Healthnet, etc. If the companmy is advertising on the radio and say that only 250 can join each day, it's not legitimate. look at the premium, deductibles, co pays, annual out of pocket max, and what it covers. You can put all the cost information in an excel spreadsheet to figure out what is the best option for you. I took a plan that is a $4000 deductible, but if I have real medical bills it would actully provide more coverage than a plan with a lower deductible. Because it pays everything after the $4000 where as other plans were still 70 / 30 or 80 / 20
- Search on the Internet for reviews of the plans. Sites such as Consumer's Checkbook offer grades for health insurers. You have to subscribe. Your employer, if you have one, may offer tools to compare the health plans that you are offered

- consumerreports.org / health / insurance / health - insurance.htm I am not sure if you can access this information from consumer reports online, but give it a try. I have been a member for years and they had numerous articles explaining the pros / cons of certain insurance policies out there. It is a basic ABC of insurance terms, coverage options etc. If for some reason you cannot access online, then go to your local library where they usually keep copies of magazines and get. Then after reading these articles, I suggest you call a local agent that can do business with several companies to compare prices / plans in your state. An agent can then hopefully suggest based on your health and type of treatment you incur yearly what would be the best plan for you. The main thing is to avoid the junk plans out there and there are many. The "BIG" companies all have them with their regular plans and unfortunately, unless you know or understand the differences could fall into that trap. The problem I see with websites is that they may quote you a price, then later could come back and quote higher. Or if you were to have some pre - existing condition, they could deny you. Once you are denied, then most companies will not touch you. So an agent can let you know if it is a problem or not. good luck

- You're wrong about "sure it exists". You can get some GENERAL information from Consumer Reports, or Wikipedia, or even Yahoo Personal finance. You can get some state specific comparison information on your state insurance department website - maybe, depending on what state you are in. You can look up trustworthiness at ambest.com, or upheld complaints again at your state insurance department website. But right now, insurance is run on a state by state basis - so you will not find any tools comparing, say, a major medical policy in NJ with an HMO in Iowa. Trustworthy, is very subjective. Insured satisfaction is also very subjective! You're not going to find everything you're looking for on one website, because it's a M IVE project, and requirements vary from one state to another - as do coverages, costs, and procedures
